Leaving a group

Is there a reason I'm not allowed to leave a group that I have created? I don't even have the option to just delete it. Or at least I can't find it. -- Experience my creation. You don't play my games, they play you. |

I've wanted to know this also. You might want to Message Sean Sullivan about this. You'll get an answer from him quicker than starting a forum thread here. _____________ Alex Ramsay Cylicon-(VT)- -- "I love the smell of Napalm in the mornin'..." |

You'll get an answer from him quicker than starting a forum thread here. ...or I can just respond here =) The design decision was made to not allow the owner to leave the group they created for the following reasons: The owner of a group is in charge of decking out the group profile with content (modules, etc). They are also in charge of allowing new members to join (if it's a private group) or inviting them. If we let the owner leave the group, who would accomplish these tasks? The obvious solution would be to allow group owners to appoint members as officers or to relinquish control of the group completely, turning over ownership to another member. What if they are the only group member? What if nobody in the group wants this responsibility? These are the types of things to consider. Any suggestions? -- "Welcome to the Great Games Experiment" |

Well I think we should be able to collapse OUR group (ie, the group WE created)whenever we want, regardless of who's in it... -- I eat babies |

We should be able to delete our group, simply because, what happens if we make a group called Guitar Heros and its actually should be spelled Heroes, we can't change the name, unless you plan on adding name change functionality, deleting the group would be far easier IMO. I have been asking for the ability to delete groups, since I joined, I really think its a feature that is needed, heck you could make it so a GG employee had to approve the group deletion if the given reason is good enough. -- "Space reserved for when I think of something catchy" |

Generally speaking in a public forum, you don't want to give the ability to delete collections of contributions. Which is what a group is. Mainly because if you create a group and several other people contribute and make posts, it isn't appropriate for another member to have the ability to wipe out that content. Also with a public forum, most of the time you don't want people to delete content in general. There are many reasons for this, the main being historical continuity of discussions. The same goes for the changing the name. We will certainly provide assistance should you make a spelling error, or there is a reasonable need to change/modify the name. But if you create a group called "Pokemon Fans" and people contribute to it, add content and participate, it isn't fair that a month down the road you change the name to "I hate Pokemon". So again it is primarily about historical continuity. Think of it more in terms of "starting" and agreeing to maintain a group, rather than outright "owning" a group. Once other people start contributing to a group they are "owners" of the content as well, at least their contribution. The groups feature is there for people to gather about a specific topic, not create arbitrary levels of hierarchy. We may in the future consider the ability to close or request removal of group if no one other than yourself has contributed to it, but probably not right away. However, once other people have contributed to it, it is there to stay (of course exceptions can be made on a case by case scenario). Some things to consider when creating a group: * Look around and ensure there isn't already a group that exists already that meets the same need, * Don't start a group if aren't prepared to maintain it, * Spellcheck BEFORE you submit, not after. Most every browser has spellcheck. * If you have questions or concerns, feel free to drop us line or ask a question, preferably before hand. -- Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. |

how about letting people delete the groups only if there is no one in it? -- Saving Noobs From Themselves since 02 , -=Hot|Ice=- Was here. |

As I said, that certainly may be a feature we add down the road. I will put it on our list to consider. Right now we have about two and a half developers dedicated to the site (though it fluctuates to a degree), and there is still a lot of work on our plates so we have to prioritize. Bear in mind there is no turnkey software on this site, (it was built from scratch from the ground by Sean and Jacob, in an impressively short time span), so there are no switches to flip, so to speak. It will have to be built. We have a huge list of things to work on, and we are knocking them out as quickly as possible. I can't say when it will be addressed, Sean makes that call, but I cannot imagine it will be to far away.how about letting people delete the groups only if there is no one in it? For the time being, if you have one you need deleted, and no has posted or contributed to it, drop us a message letting us know and we can take care of it manually. Thanks, Scott. -- Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. |

I did get your message. We should get to it the first part of next week. We are currently testing some upgrades to the site and will do that the same time we take those live. Thanks, Scott. -- Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. |
